Internal Audit Services

An NDIS internal audit tells you exactly where your organisation stands against the NDIS Practice Standards — before an approved auditing body finds the gaps for you. It is the difference between walking into your certification or verification audit prepared, and walking in hoping your documentation holds up.

VCCG’s NDIS internal audit services give providers a clear, evidence-based view of their compliance position. We assess your policies, your records, and your day-to-day operations against the same standards an external auditor will use, then give you a practical plan to close any gaps.

What an NDIS Internal Audit Covers

An internal audit is a structured review of your organisation against the NDIS Practice Standards relevant to your registration groups. VCCG’s internal audit process covers four core areas:

Governance & Risk Management

Whether your organisation has clear accountability structures, an active risk register, and decision-making processes that hold up under scrutiny.

Policies & procedures

Whether your documented policies reflect what actually happens in your service delivery, not just what is written on paper.

Incident & Complaints

Whether your incident register shows timely reporting, documented review, and evidence of corrective action — not just a log of events.

Workforce compliance

Whether worker screening checks, qualifications, training records, and supervision documentation are current and complete for every relevant staff member.

Matters

Why an Internal Audit Matters Before Your Real Audit

Every non-conformance found during a certification or verification audit costs you time and money. Corrective action plans extend your audit timeline. Repeat reviews add cost. A failed audit can delay your registration or renewal by months.

An internal audit finds these gaps while you still have time to fix them. VCCG’s auditors assess your organisation the way an approved auditing body would — reviewing documents, checking records, observing operations, and asking the same questions your staff will face in a real audit.

The providers who pass their NDIS audit with no non-conformances are, almost without exception, the providers who ran an internal audit first.

Our NDIS Internal Audit Process

Step 1 — Scope and document review VCCG reviews your current registration groups, policies, and procedures to confirm what standards apply to your organisation and what evidence is currently in place.

Step 2 — Evidence and operational assessment We assess your records, your incident and complaints systems, and your operational practices against the relevant NDIS Practice Standards. Where possible, this includes direct observation of service delivery and conversations with staff.

Step 3 — Gap report and risk rating You receive a clear report identifying every gap found, rated by risk level — critical, moderate, or minor — so you know exactly what to fix first.

Step 4 — Remediation support VCCG works with you to close the gaps identified, from policy updates and documentation rebuilds through to staff briefings and system improvements.

Step 5 — Re-check before your audit date If your internal audit is run ahead of a confirmed certification or mid-term audit, VCCG can conduct a final check closer to the audit date to confirm readiness.

Who Needs an NDIS Internal Audit

Providers preparing for a mid-term or renewal audit — An internal audit run several months ahead of a scheduled audit gives you time to remediate properly, rather than scrambling in the final weeks.

Providers who have grown or changed operations — If you have added registration groups, increased staff numbers, or changed your service delivery model since your last audit, an internal audit confirms your compliance position has kept pace with your growth.

Providers who have never had an external review — If your organisation has not been independently assessed since initial registration, an internal audit gives you an honest, current picture of where you stand.

Providers responding to a notice or complaint — If the NDIS Commission has raised a concern or a complaint has been lodged, an internal audit helps you respond from a position of evidence rather than assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stay updated with Our Consulting Services

An internal audit is a voluntary review conducted by a consultant to assess your compliance position. It carries no regulatory weight and is not reported to the NDIS Commission. A Commission audit is conducted by an approved auditing body and forms part of your registration, renewal, or mid-term obligations.

Most internal audits take two to four weeks from initial document review to final report, depending on the size of your organisation and the number of registration groups in scope.

Most providers benefit from an internal audit ahead of every scheduled Commission audit — initial registration, mid-term, and renewal — as well as after any significant operational change, such as adding registration groups or expanding service delivery.

No audit can guarantee an outcome, but an internal audit significantly reduces your risk by identifying and allowing time to fix the gaps an external auditor is most likely to find.
